Bosma Aegis Smart Door Lock Features

The Aegis lock has a Bluetooth radio but requires the provided Wi-Fi module for remote access since it lacks built-in Wi-Fi. You can operate the lock through voice commands from Alexa and Google Assistant, and also link it with other compatible devices on these platforms. IFTTT integration boosts its interoperability with other smart home devices and services, but it does not support Apple’s HomeKit platform.

For long-term access, users can install the mobile app or use a traditional key. Sharing an 8-character access code via a custom URL is also an option. The code is time-restricted, but not for one-time use.

Design

Priced at just $119, the Bosma Aegis retrofit lock offers an affordable alternative to the August Wifi lock with similar functions and installation processes. However, it falls short in terms of build quality due to its plastic construction, and its large size and loudness may be off-putting to some. The lock also requires a separate bridge for operation. Despite these drawbacks, the Bosma Aegis can be a suitable option for those who desire the features of the August Wifi lock without the higher price tag, making it a budget-friendly alternative

To manually lock or unlock the door, simply rotate the entire lock to the right or left, depending on the position of the deadbolt. Removing the magnetic front cover will expose the battery compartment, reset button, and LED indicators. Inside, there is also a button that can be pressed to lock or unlock the door. The LEDs will emit a blue light when the door is locked and a green light when it is unlocked.

In terms of hardware, the Aegis is bigger, measuring 3.5 inches across and 2.5 inches deep with an octagonal shape, unlike the round design of August Wi-Fi (2.8 inches) and August Pro (3.4 inches). Although it might be a little uncomfortable to grip and twist at first, most people will adjust to it with time. Alternatively, you can push the face of the lock like a button to lock and unlock the door.

Installation

Installing the Aegis lock is a straightforward process. First, unscrew the two bolts holding the two escutcheons together. Next, replace the interior side with a small base plate. The Aegis’s base plate is similar to the one used in August locks, which cleverly allows for the repositioning of screw holes as needed.

Once the base plate is installed, the next step is to choose an adapter for the old lock’s tailpiece to connect it to the interior escutcheon for deadbolt turning. The Aegis comes with four adapters, which is typical for retrofit locks. Once the adapter is selected, piece together the base plate, adapter, and interior escutcheon. The two wings on the side of the Aegis will then swing down and grip the base plate to lock the mechanism tightly in place, just like the August system. Finally, install four AA batteries under the magnetic cover and start setting up the lock in the Bosma app.

Bosma Aegis App

To operate the Aegis lock, use the Bosma mobile app, (available for Android and iOS). Once the app is launched, tap the lock’s dedicated panel to access a screen with a sizable circular icon. The circle will change colors, turning blue when the door is locked and gold when it is unlocked. You can lock or unlock the door by simply tapping the circle.

At the top of the screen, you’ll see a battery level indicator, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signal strength indicators, and a gear icon. You can use the gear icon to toggle features like Auto-Unlock, which unlocks the door automatically when you’re within Bluetooth range or based on your location. Auto-Lock, which locks the door immediately after closing it. Break-In Detection, which activates an alarm if anyone tampers with the alarm, and Door Security Alarm, which alerts you with an alarm when the door remains open for a few minutes. You can also view an activity history log, enable notifications, and create guest codes that expire after a certain period using other settings. Guests will have to download the mobile app to use these codes.

THE BOTTOM LINE

The Aegis Smart Lock is an affordable and easy-to-install option that operates silently and integrates with various smart home devices.
